A female zookeeper was killed on Monday by a tiger at Hamerton Zoo in the county of Cambridgeshire, about 80 miles north of London.

“We are sorry but our staff are too distressed to speak directly to the media, as one of our colleagues was killed at Hamerton Zoo Park, this morning,” the zoo said in a statement.

Zoo officials called the incident a “freak accident” and said that no animals escaped from their enclosures.

“They let out a blood-curdling scream,” a visitor told Cambridge News, “and then another keeper ran out and shouted ‘run.’”

Cambridgeshire police said in a statement on Monday night that the “incident is not believed to be suspicious.”

Hamerton Zoo will remain closed on Tuesday, May 30, during an investigation.

The 25-acre wildlife park is home to four Bengal tigers. A male named “Blizzard” and his mate “Lady Belle” arrived at the facility in 2001. Another pair arrived from Germany in 2014. It’s not clear which tiger was involved in the attack.
